Must-See Movies 2011 #2: Thor, Captain America and X-Men: First Class

Thor PosterI have to admit that these three movies have got me pretty excited and I don’t know which one I would pick if I had to choose only one… Right now, based on trailers alone, I’m leaning towards Thor, but that’s not really fair, especially since Captain America has only had the TV spot so far. But seriously, come now, it has Natalie Portman in it!

I’m not  gonna say much about them here, but if you do want all the info about them I would recommend heading here - http://avengersnews.com/ – since two of these movies are building up for the big one in 2012: The Avengers directed by Joss Whedon

For those of you who don’t know, the Hulk and Iron Man movies are also tied into the Avengers movie. At the end of 2008′s Incredible Hulk and the Iron Man Movies, you will catch the hints Thor, Captain America and The Avengers. So make sure you watch them as well if you haven’t already.

The X-Men movies are completely separate, but they rock anyway, that’s why First Class is thrown in here :)

Revenge of the Zombie Girlfriend: Zombie Army

I originally wrote the first part of the Zombie Girlfriend as a dedication to my girlfriend and ever since then, traffic to my blog increased threefold. So clearly I am either getting a lot of random traffic or some of you out there actually enjoyed it… Either way, I actually enjoyed writing it, so here is part two. If you do actually enjoy this, read the two Katalina Blog Challenge posts which covered the boyfriends story, here: #1 & #2.

They moved slowly down the road, not knowing why, but ever since their latest member had joined them, the zombies had an overwhelming urge to follow her. Although there was very little of the woman that she once was, the Zombie Girlfriend had only one goal: to kill her boyfriend. When she had felt  her consciousness had started to move on, she fought it with every ounce of her being. It had worked to her surprise. Once in a while the zombie mind took over, but it had become easier to fight it now that she knew how. It never went away completely, but as long as she let it feed, which was it’s only goal, it seemed to let her keep that hint of control.

It had been going on like this for months. The group that she was now “leading” had grown in numbers and a while back, there had been only a few other zombies following her lead. She didn’t know why, but they must have sensed her strength and purpose. Either way, they had started to become a force to reckon with. With her higher mental capacity, she knew when they needed to hide and when to attack. During one attack, she had realised that she could actually grow her army’s numbers. This had led her to attack a group of rather weak survivors who were not only starving, but had also just survived another zombie attack. They had quickly overwhelmed the five survivors, but instead of completely slaughtering and eating them, she had got them to leave one of the human females intact, although she had bitten her. She had convinced the group to wait and later, the female had come back to life. For the next few weeks, she had carried on doing this. She made sure that the group had their fill of human flesh, but during every attack she had made sure at least one or two humans were left to rise again. Their numbers had grown to almost fifty now and she decided that they were powerful enough to overwhelm any humans they came across. There were losses of course, but she always made sure they were replaced.

Although her mental capacity was not near what it once, it was at least ten times that of a regular zombie. This allowed her to follow her one and only goal: to kick her boyfriend’s ass. Her army did not have this purpose, yet they still followed. Along the way, she occasionally found clues that the boyfriend had been that way. They may have been months old clues, but they indicated that she was heading in the right direction, which meant that although it would possibly be months or years before she found him, she would one day find him. She had also found out that he had recently been joined by other humans, two to be exact. She had no idea who they were, but if they had decided to join him, they too would fall at her hands. Revenge is a bitch, she thought to herself, before rallying her troops and moving on.

*This post is dedicated to my girlfriend, whose alternate-(not)-her was shot in the head in my first Katalina Blog Challenge post

Her eyes started opening and a she felt a dull pain on the side of her head. She tried to move her hand to rub the pain away, but instead of her arm moving, her body started slowly rising from the ground. It wasn’t in the graceful manner she usually did things either. It was very clumsy. In her mind she said “What the hell is happening?” What came out was more like “Uuurgh!”

Panic started to build up in her head. Her body had started stumbling out of her boyfriend’s lounge, into the back garden, and despite her trying her hardest to look in the mirror as she walked past it in the lounge, she only managed to get a glance, but something seemed off. Her body carried on around the side of the house to the driveway gate, which was closed.

She watched on as her arms reached for the gate and started shaking them in an attempt to get them open. It was damn frustrating for her to watch, for the next ten minutes, as her arms shook the gate continuously. Eventually by pure luck they popped open and her body started moving forward again and for the next 30 minutes moved along deserted roads. Eventually in the distance she saw movement. There were a group of people moving along  towards a shopping centre at the bottom of the road. After a few minutes, she started passing shop windows and eventually when her body turned it’s head, she saw for the first time what had become of her.

The side of her head was covered in dry blood and she saw what looked like a bullet wound. Her eyes and skin had gone a strange grey colour as well. She tried to scream, but again all that came out was another “Uuurgh!” It then all started coming back to her.

She had no idea how long ago it had been, but it had seemed like yesterday that she had been out shopping and the strange man had bitten her while she was in the parking lot. The security guard driving past had quickly stopped and had helped her; he had even dressed the wound with a first aid kit in his car.

She had arrived at her boyfriends house an hour or so later and they had been sitting on the couch, when she had an overwhelming urge to bite him. She couldn’t though, because  he had jumped off the couch and darted off to the bedroom. Before she knew what had happened, he pointed his revolver at her and pulled the trigger. All she had known about zombies, she had learned from him in the short time they had been together. She was now a zombie, that’s why he had shot her. His shot had not been effective in killing her however, not that it made it any better, if she found him now, she would bite the hell out of his ass, she thought to herself.

With this thought in her mind, her body seemed to move forward with purpose, to search for the group of people she had seen, presumably zombies now that she thought about it. Eventually she found them. She did not realise it straight away, but her brain had started to switch off, but her last thoughts of getting revenge on her boyfriend were the ones that would haunt her zombie for the rest of it’s time on this planet. Her consciousness however, was now at last free to move on.

He stared into the mirror before him. Not that it was much of a mirror after years of neglect. Scars down his body were a sign of how his life had changed in the years since Day-Z, as he liked to call it. Day-Z was the day that he awakened to the horror of the media’s so-called “Zombie Apocalypse“.

Back then, he had been a lot more carefree and didn’t have to constantly watch his back. In those first few months, he had to become a survivor. He had to stop caring about others as much as he had in the past. On a few occasions, before he had come to this decison, it had backfired and he barely made it out alive. Once in a while though, he came across a survivor or a group of survivors, but his trust of them held him back, so he was still alone. At first he had thought that after a while the zombies would just die away, but that was definitely not the case. All this time later, they were still around, and were always growing in numbers. The disease, or whatever it was, had evolved and once the ‘easy’ human targets were difficult ti attack, something had happened that still scared him. As if undead humans weren’t bad enough, undead wolves, bears and whatever other animal got infected were just as bad, or worse in some cases. Trying to ward off a zombie bear on attack, or avoiding bites from zombie squirrels or rats was not one of his favourite pastimes…

He stepped out of the dark room into the harsh sunlight. He heard a rustling noise to his left. Out of the brush, came what was left of a once beautiful young girl. Closer inspection revealed that the entire bottom half of her body was missing and entrails were being dragged behind her as she pulled herself along toward him. The next part never got easy. He unsheathed the machete hanging from his belt and moved toward her, putting her out of he misery.

A few hours later, he reached the place he had been heading for. It had taken many months for him to build up the courage to come here.  Ahead of him was a cabin which was built on the banks of a once peaceful stream; it was a place of memories long forgotten, or rather forcibly forgotten. Many years ago, he had spent his vacations here with family and friends and even now the memories were coming back. His thoughts were interrupted as he got nearer however. Something made him realise that while he may not have been here in a while, there was signs that the cabin had been used quite recently. The survivor in him took over as he slowly approached, expecting anything.

As he was approaching the back entrance of  the cabin, something made him turn around. He was now staring down the barrel of a sawn-off shotgun being held by a boy who probably hadn’t even finished school before Day Z. Before the survivor in him came out, a familiar voice called out, a voice he had not recognised straight away and truly had never expected to hear again.

“Hello little brother,” the voice said, “you were probably the last person I expected to meet. Please excuse Alex, he is just very protective, he means you no harm.

“Isn’t that right Alex?” she said, before asking: “Now tell me, how has my nerdy brother manage to survive for this long?”

For a while, our hero just stood in the same spot, completely speechless. This was truly the last thing he expected to find at this place.

Must-See Movies 2011 #1: Hobo with a Shotgun

Exploitation films are very difficult to judge. Sometimes there’s too much gore and not enough story, sometimes any hope of the good story meaning anything is lost by crap acting or directing, etc.

Machete pulled it off, as did the Tarantino/Rodriguez Grindhouse duo. I won’t even bother mentioning those that didn’t because that’s just not worth the effort…

There is one that has had my attention for a while now and after the awesome reception it had at the Sundance Festival, I am even more excited than I ever was. It started with the “fake” Grindhouse trailer which I honestly never thought would ever get made.

Then to my surprise, rumours that Jason Eisener was taking this project on began to surface. Cue excitement. Then came the best news ever: Rutger Hauer would be starring as the Hobo!! The legend of Bladerunner and The Hitcher fame is pretty much be the perfect person for the role of the Hobo.

I read this earlier last year and then it kinda got filed away, but then I happened to come across the new trailer again during the past week and just want to share it with all you folks out there who give a damn. I have a feeling the girlfriend won’t like this one though, so will probably watch with some mates or solo when I do! :)

Keep an eye out for this one…

It had been a long day for our hero, so he had stopped at a deserted picnic spot along the road. In the past few weeks, life had become increasingly difficult; food was becoming scarce, as were most of the supplies he needed to survive. People had once called him Charles, but he hadn’t come across another human being in past few weeks for that to matter much (not one that didn’t want to eat his living flesh anyway). He doubted whether the “zombies” cared what his name was. This wasn’t really a problem for him. The loner in him and the fact that he was actually quite shy and withdrawn now served him well.

It was a pity that no-one seemed to care who or what he was anymore. He had once been just an average IT guy, working in an average shitty  job, but still had some interesting stories and knowledge to share nonetheless – the fact that he was a bit of a zombie expert had actually helped him to get through this so-called zombie apocalypse and what he knew now continued to keep him alive. Zombie Apocalypse – thats what the media called it. For the first few days anyway, after that pretty much everything went to shit and all forms of news had ceased to exist within the first week.

He wiped the sweat off his forehead. He was always sweating, even in mild weather. He also brushed his hand through his short brown hair, again noticed his receding hairline. His ever increasing baldness pissed him off to no end. It was in the genes, but that wasn’t any consolation to him. He had lately resorted to shaving it all off to try hide the fact, but even then it was annoying to him. A while back his weight had also pissed him off, but in the year leading up to the end of the world as we know it, he had lost quite a bit of weight, which was pretty lucky, because if he hadn’t it was unlikely he would have made it this far. Zombies have no mercy for fat fucks. While he was nowhere close to a ten or even a six or seven for that matter, he was looking the best he had in years and he knew it. It had also boosted his confidence a teeny bit. It was most likely also the reason that he had managed to start dating the girl that he had ended up having to shoot in the head at the beginning of this SNAFU. It was a pity, as he had really liked her, even after only a few weeks of dating: he hadn’t even had a chance to change his Facebook relationship status.

Thinking about Facebook made him think about the biggest problem that he had encountered so far, and it annoyed the hell out of him. It was the fact  that all the gadgets and tech that he had loved in his old life were pretty useless. In normal times, he wouldn’t have been found without at least a few gadgets in his possession. The only gadget he had left, that he could actually use, was his iPod and the only reason he used it was due to his luck in finding a wind-up charger for it. At that moment he was listening to some metal on low volume through one earphone. Any other way and he would be dead within the day; the zombies were damn sneaky sometimes and hearing them coming gave you a bit of an advantage.

One of his favourite songs by Killswitch Engage started playing.  He got up from where he was resting, slung the shotgun over his shoulder and put the machete and pistol back in their places on his belt. He carried on walking, singing along under his breathe, along the deserted road ahead. He let out a deep sigh and wondered what his future held, all he knew was that he was now really sick of zombies…
