The stares

I can’t stand them

My fears

I can’t fathom them

It all seems so uncertain

.

Days and months pass by

Every moment harder than the last

Betrayed by a kiss

Enslaved by a word

My life can never be the same

.

Peering back

Many regrets

Glancing forward

It seems so bleak

The shadows surround me

.

A moment of weakness

A life of pity

Tortured by memories

They forever haunt me

Destined to never forget

When reading this the other day on Facebook, it gave me that fuzzy feeling in my stomach, that one that is usually accompanied by an “Aww!”

To put it in perspective, my friend’s sister’s eldest daughter lost her first tooth and mommy had to engage Tooth-Fairy mode.

I just couldn’t help but share…

My NaNoWriMo Novel

It’s my second year doing Nanowrimo and I hope that I manage to finish this year again. I’m a bit behind schedule, but nothing too hectic, I should be able to catch up… I hope…

This time around though, I wanna try something different. I’ve got a good foundation for my story, but from here, I can pretty much go anywhere…

The story so far:

We have discovered other intelligent life, and their shared knowledge has placed humanity on the brink of an era of mass exploration. Meanwhile Kalar, a hitman with very few morals, has stolen a new AI ship, Bob, capable of  almost anything, including being psychic & telepathic. Of course, the ship doesn’t really appreciate being stolen, and decides to make Kalar’s life difficult…

So anyone out there who wants to try and challenge me with something to include in the story should just head along to http://AnInconvenientAI.wordpress.com/ and comment on one of my posts.

Busy month ahead…

I (heart) MoIt’s gonna be quite a busy month this November. Not only have I got quite a lot of personal things going on, but it is also Movember and NaNoWriMo.

Even though the last few months have been quiet on the blogging front, I don’t expect to be doing much for the rest of the year.

It all started this morning, whenI managed to get in just short of 1000 words in for NaNoWriMo. Will get some more in before I sleep hopefully. Even though you only need to get in 1333 everyday, like last year, I want to aim for 2000-2500 per day so I have a few days where I don’t have to worry about it. Especially over weekends and the like.

Tonight is the official weigh in for the Chingada’s ‘Tache for Cash competition, so I’m not sure I will get in the last 1000 words or so, but it’s all for a good cause, so that’s okay.

My NaNo novel is something very random this year. Here’s my synopsis so far:

We have discovered other intelligent life, and their shared knowledge has placed humanity on the brink of an era of mass exploration. Meanwhile Kalar, a hitman with very few morals, has stolen a new AI ship capable of  almost anything. Of course, the ship doesn’t appreciate being stolen, and decides to make Kalar’s life difficult…

I have an idea about how the ship being able to turn Kalar’s dreams into reality through a glitch in it’s manufacturing,  but I’ll figure that bit out later.

Will try check in once in a while, but no promises.

Have a good Movember everybody :)

The 30 Day Book Challenge: Day 1 & 2

Cover of "World War Z: An Oral History of...

Cover via Amazon

A friend of mine over at The Katalina Playroom put up a challenge that she found browsing around the net. I honestly doubt that I’ll get to doing a post a day, but I thought that I’d do the challenge anyway and do a “day” as I get a chance. I wouldn’t be surprised if it took me 90 days or more.

To get things going, I thought I’d combine the first two days into one post.

Day 1: You Favourite Book

This one is very easy for me really. Of course it involves zombies, and if you know me, you’ve probably already guessed that it is “World War Z” by Max Brooks.

The book is written in a first person narrative as a report from an UN agent who was not satisfied with the official report the UN released to the public. The report is a collection of his interviews with different people of various nationalities, covering most aspects of the decade long war against the zombies. Even my home country is included in the book, which I admit was quite exciting, especially since in the novel it was after an outbreak in South Africa that the zombie plague was brought to the world’s attention.

One of the novel’s greatest strengths is the fact that it doesn’t seem like a novel, but at the same time draws you. It took me less than three days to read this book, compared to a novel like the Constant Gardener, which admittedly isn’t one of my favourites and will probably be my Day 7 book, as I started reading it in February this year.

The book follows Brooks’ previous zombie book, “The Zombie Survival Guide“, and is based heavily on what was covered in this book. What I really appreciate about this book is how well researched it was. In an interview with the Washington Post, Brooks said:

“Everything in World War Z (as in The Zombie Survival Guide) is based in reality… well, except the zombies. But seriously, everything else in the book is either taken from reality or 100% real. The technology, politics, economics, culture, military tactics… it was a LOT of homework.”

As you are probably aware there is a movie that is currently in production starring Brad Pitt. I will keep an open mind with regards to the film, but it has a helluva lot to live up to.

Day 2: Least Favourite Book

I refuse to elaborate too much on why this book is my least favourite, but it probably has a lot to do with being forced to read it in high school, followed by one of the most boring films of all time starring Robert Redford. Yup, its the Great Gatsby…

The fact that it’s referred to as one of the second best novel of the 20th century by the Modern Library means little to me. It is overrated and boring and that is all I have to say about it.

Revenge of the Zombie Girlfriend: A Brief Interlude

It has been quite a while, almost 5 months to be exact, since I started writing my “Revenge of the Zombie Girlfriend” story. A recently self-published author friend of mine started a blog challenge back in February called the Katalina Blog Challenge. It was partly to get herself motivated to write if I recall, but I also felt the need for motivation myself, so when the first challenge came out I was quite excited to get started.

We were told to write ourselves into a short scene, but as the main character and in third person. We were told to describe ourselves as we were then. I decided to put myself into a zombie infested wasteland as a survivor. For anyone that knows me, this shouldn’t be a surprise. I love anything Zombie… I had also just started dating my girlfriend back then and in the story I had found out that she had been turned and shot her in the head. It was quite funny seeing the reaction that got from her and my friends. I came to an agreement with my girlfriend that the zombie version of her in the story is not her and started referring to that version of her as “alternate not-you” in conversations with her.

In the second challenge we had to insert some sort of solution to the scene we had created. From that day I started getting increased traffic to my blog and decided to carry on with the story under the title “Revenge of the Zombie Girlfriend” and haven’t wanted to change it since.

Every time I have posted a new part of the story, I have received massive boosts in the amount of traffic to my blog. When I published the last part, I had the highest amount of traffic for one day at over 600 hits. I know this is still very little in the grand scheme of things, but for me it’s more than ten times the amount of traffic I had to my blog in it’s first month in just one day!

I have come to the decision that I need to start giving the story some of the desperate attention it deserves. I need to take this ugly chunk of wood and carve something awesome out of it. I’ll be the first to admit that, right now, I would never buy this book if it were one. It’s a bit messy, really untidy, very random, it’s all over the place and is more bad than good right now. I won’t even get into plot holes.

Thanks for all the support my story has received so far nonetheless, and hopefully soon I’ll be able to compile it all into a nice neat e-book for your enjoyment. For now you can still read it here though.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank my awesome girlfriend for putting up with me about this. I have to admit that I rather enjoy your reactions to the parts which the Zombie Girlfriend (alternate-not-you) is in.

Wish me luck!

Charlie walked out of the bathroom and saw that Alex and Karen were already finished. He did tend to have a bad habit of taking ridiculously long showers. Not that he had been that long, Alex and Karen were just really quick. Pre-Day-Z this hadn’t been a big issue but now, you were lucky if you could find a shower that still worked.

Alex had again withdrawn back into his shell, possibly because of the new surroundings, although he doubted that. Most likely it was meeting strangers. Karen was busy talking to him and he was whispering back, but Charlie couldn’t make out what he was whispering. Reading lips was only something the heroes in the movies could do. Charlie took a step outside and saw there was a commotion at the gate. He noticed that everyone around had stopped what they were doing, even those repairing the wall on the far side. Charlie could only imagine things weren’t quite going according to plan here. He could feel the tension in the air.

He moved towards the gathering and saw they were crowding around someone. As he got closer, he heard the name D-Boy being murmured in the crowd. If he recalled correctly, that was the anme of one of the people that were with Lisa. At the edge of the crowd, he could still not see anything. He squeezed his way through slowly until he was standing next to Bob. He then saw a young man being held closely by a good-looking women, who was rocking him back and forth in her arms. She turned her head scanning the crowd and screamed “Where the fuck is that whore?”

Bob started saying something, but before he could even get through the first word, she said, “And don’t you fucking say that we need to investigate this or confirm that. My fucking brother is lucky to have escaped alive and it’s no thanks to that bitch.”

“We don’t know anything Cindy, all that he said before he passed out was her name. Nothing more!”

“Screw you Bob. Just pray to God that I don’t find that bitch before you do.”

“Fang, come here.” he said to a scary figure standing behind them. The figure moved forward. “Take Cindy to my quarters and make sure she doesn’t get out until I clear it.”

He then turned to Cindy and said, “This is only because I care about you. We can’t have people running around killing each other. Once D-Boy wakes up, we can then talk to him again, but I’m not about to let some petty fucking feud between the two of you get out of hand over a simple mention of her name.”

She got up and was about to rush at him but Fang had managed to grab her and start dragging her away, now screaming like a crazy person.

“Okay that’s it, get the hell outta here,” he said to the crowd, “I’m sure you all have something productive you could be doing. That means you too Jess, I’m really not in the mood for your shit now.

Bob walked away and was hoping that when D-Boy did wake up again, he wouldn’t put this on Lisa. Mistrust would destroy all that he had achieved here. He noticed Charlie following him and asked, “Can I help you Charlie?”

“No, was just wondering what all the fuss was about, although now that you mention it, I wanted to ask what news you may have heard these last few days. We have been out of contact for a while.”

“Just a few ruffled feathers is all. D-Boy is fine, but he is just exhausted from escaping. Luckily he didn’t get bit. Otherwise we would have a whole different problem on our hands.

“As for news, it’s not too good there either, we heard from a passer-by that this supposed zombie army is gettuing closer each day and is also growing at an alarming rate. They’re still days away though, I just hope that they are just rumours.”

“I heard about this army. The last I had heard of them, they were about a week or so behind us at least. We need to do something to stop them. that’s for sure.”

“Charlie I like the way that you think. I can’t talk right now, I need to deal with this crap, but we must speak soon. See you later.”

“No worries, looking forward to it Bob.”
